Bridgewater State College
Library Quadrangle

Bridgewater, Massachusetts
1997-2001

Deteriorated multi-level brick terraces used to occupy the space between BSC’s Auditorium and Maxwell Library, creating obstacles for the disabled and able-bodied students alike. DDA’s design to reconstruct this space transforms it into a simple functional collegiate quadrangle. A lowered green replaces the super-elevated expanses of paving. A tree lined promenade links this space with the Rondilieu Campus Center, also designed by DDA, and other campus destinations. New accessible walkways converge on a new main Library entry, which is ringed by a curved granite seat wall. Other walls provide both seating and spatial definition at the northern and southern ends of the Quadrangle. Completing the simple palette are BSC standard light posts and benches, which line lateral walks alongside the buildings.
