Amherst College
Amherst Circle

Amherst, Massachusetts
1997-1998

DDA’s reconstruction of Amherst College’s oldest quadrangle tames the ubiquitous automobile and enhances the space with a commemorative garden, plantings and signature campus light posts. New, more efficient parking areas enable strategic car-free zones in front of the Music Building and the two residential halls, without substantial loss of parking convenience. The commemorative garden transforms an otherwise dark object – a sculpture of Noah Webster - into an inviting place with granite terrace, teak benches and multi-layered seasonal plantings. The central lawn circle is crisply defined by new granite curbing. Transitional areas are de-fined, as well, by new canopy trees and understory groundcovers and perennials. New light posts complete these improvements and unify the newly reconstructed Webster Circle with the rest of the campus. Amherst, Massachusetts 1997 - 1998 Amherst College Webster Circle
