French Hall Landscape

Amherst, Massachusetts
1999

French Hall stands as one of the oldest and most refined structures on the University of Massachusetts campus. Its classical revival architecture dates to the early 20th Century. DDA’s design for its landscape reflects the building’s understated formality with an elegant yet simple design scheme. Beginning with removals of massive overgrown shrubs, the landscape design features a curved entry walk; a wide, cut stone border; and a mass planting of ornamental grasses lavishly interspersed with spring bulbs.
