Westbriar Elementary School
Master Plan and Phase 1 Design

Vienna, Virginia
1991-1992

DDA ’s Master Plan for this neighborhood elementary school envisioned transformation of a barren suburban site into a more attractive community resource and outdoor nature education laboratory in association with the National Wildlife Association’s Backyard Habitat Program. The Plan proposed functional and visual improvements to the school ’s front entry and play court/parking area and, in the rear, creation of a succession plot, hillside wildlife corridor, wetland and outdoor classroom. Implementation began in 1991 when DDA staff supervised a volunteer work party of parents, teachers and students, completing a seat wall and plantings for the front and fencing and signage for a succession plot in the rear.
