American University
Ward Circle Sign

Washington, DC
1986

The sign at the intersection of Massachusetts and Nebraska Avenues identifies The American University campus at its most prominent location. Its long arced cast stone form complements Ward Circle’s geometry and suits its automotive scale. It is most dramatic at night when lit from below with recessed illumination. DDA principal Nancy Watkins Denig, ASLA, developed, tested and documented the design of the sign and its minimalist setting. Since its installation in 1986, it has become AU’s symbol and prototype for a companion piece at the Tenley Circle campus.
