The Garden at Deerfield Inn

Deerfield, Massachusetts
1997

DDA’s design for the garden at Deerfield Inn creates a useful and pleasant oasis where there was once an inaccessible slope and an intrusive parking area between the Inn and Museum at Historic Deerfield. The design terraces the slope with a dry-laid stone wall, delineating a lower level tent lawn and an upper level garden. Common to both levels are the gently graded brick walkway, rectilinear lawn panels and mixed perennial borders, all inspired by the austerity and elegance of the garden’s early New England ambience. Garden lighting along the walk en-hances all these features during evening hours. A Bayberry hedge screens the new oasis from a reconstructed parking to the rear.
