The Porches Inn
Landscape Design

North Adams, Massachusetts
2000-2001

Laborers’ row housing across the road from a gargantuan factory: these are familiar sights in historic New England mill towns. Bold new uses distinguish this scene in North Adams where the factory has become the renowned Mass MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) and the housing has become a Bed and Breakfast: the Porches Inn. DDA’s design for the Inn’s landscape responds to its setting, wedged between city street and steep wooded slope. Street-side, colorful country style plantings lap the Inn’s front porches.

Out back, a 1920’s style drive doubles as a linear park and leads guests to a pool and spa. The pool and spa terrace is tucked into the hillside with a dry laid stone wall, crowned with masses of native meadow species. One of the three courtyard gardens, shown top right, features a carpet of shade-loving groundcovers and playful arrangements of glass gazing balls.
