Red Lion Inn
Landscape Design

Stockbridge, Massachusetts
2004

The Red Lion Inn is a New England landmark, founded in 1773 and immortalized by Norman Rockwell’s snowy panorama of Main Street, Stockbridge, Massachusetts. DDA ’s design for the Inn’s frontage removes inappropriate and unnecessary accretions (below right) – overgrown foundation plantings, fencing, modern signage, an awning and furnishings – to re-create the simplicity and historic integrity evident in photo archives and Rockwell’s depiction(shown below left). The design also enhances street-level animation with the addition of a secondary walk, perennial plantings, seating and pedestrian-oriented metal signage.
