Grandmothers' Garden
Rehabilitation Plan

Westfield, Massachusetts
1999

Nestled within a ten-acre municipal park, the half acre garden affectinately known as Grandmothers’ was designed and laid out in the Colonial Revival style, popularized by contemporary 1930’s garden reconstruction at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. While many of its original plantings had disappeared, its bi-axial parterre pattern, stone wall, walkways, summerhouse and wishing well remained sixty years later. DDA’s construction documents for the Garden’s rehabilitation are based on analyses of such remains and historic photographs. The photographs shown below compared historic, recent (pre-restoration) and restored conditions.
