Sojourner Truth Memorial Park
Landscape Design

Florence, MA
2001-2003

Freed slave, abolitionist, evangelist and feminist, Sojourner Truth was a remarkable woman in the annals of nineteenth century American history. A larger than life-size bronze sculpture of her now presides over a small park in Florence, Massachusetts, where she moved in the 1840’s to join a utopian community founded on the principles of racial and gender equality. DDA’s design for the park provides for both school groups and lone visitors with fieldstone paving, granite seating and interpretive signage. These features are formed in a series of terraces and walks framed by mixed borders or surrounding lawns.
