National Zoological Park
Think Tank Exhibit

Washington, DC
1995-1996

The “Think Tank” is a ground breaking exhibit on animal intelligence. The unique “O Line”, a 700 linear foot system of towers and cables by which Orangutans transport themselves from their base at the Great Apes House, serves an unprecedented purpose while fitting into the historic character of the National Zoo’s buildings and grounds. The Lion tailed Macaque area, likewise, replaces retrograde barred cages fronting of the Zoo’s oldest building with a habitat environment inside a traditional conservatory structure. DDA won a merit award from the American Society of Landscape Architects Potomac Chapter for its design of this exhibit, which was featured in a cover article in the Smithsonian magazine (June, 1996).
