Pinto Residence
Master Plan and Landscape Design

Ashfield, Massachusetts
2002

This shingled retreat cottage sits atop a clearing in the hills of western Massachusetts. Nothing had been done to root the building to the land or to accomodate enjoyment of the outdoors. DDA’s design for the Pinto’s home landscape creates a walled dooryard garden with a shel-tered, sunny fieldstone terrace. Beyond the wall and out of sight of the kitchen, parked cars are tucked into the woodland edge with a fieldstone back-up surface doubling as an entry foyer. From the foyer, stone plinths mark the arrival path through the garden to the front door.

At the eastern end of the cottage a screened porch presides over a new earthwork formation, where boulders hold a semi circular space and a gently regraded lawn begins to sweep around to the front. At the fulcrum of this sweep is a super sized rock garden, topped with waving russet hues of native switch grass. The next design phase will continue this mix of minimalist and artless interventions into the forest edge and an adjoining meadow.
