Alexander House Streetscape
Second Avenue and Apple Street

Silver Spring, Maryland
1992

Alexander House is a high-rise mixed use apartment building extending half a block in each direction from the corner of Second Avenue and Apple Street, two blocks from the Silver Spring metro stop. The corner itself features special paving and a decorative gateway into a court-yard park. The first-level shops and townhouses along the two streets meet the brick sidewalk with pedestrian-scaled features: limestone seat wall/raised planters, metal fencing, gates and street trees. The townhouses have gated entry gardens, each with a terrace and lush plantings. The management of offce entry, shown here, is distinguished by pillars amd marquee. Nancy W.Denig, ASLA, was project landscape architect for the design of this distinctive streetscape, working in close collaboration with the building architects and metalwork artist, Linda De Palma.
